Celebrating the Joy of Being a Published Author

Written on

Chapter 1: The Thrill of Publication

There’s an unparalleled joy in opening the cover of a brand-new book — particularly one that bears your name. It’s tangible and authentic, exuding the distinct scent and feel of a real book, because that’s precisely what it is.

Relish that jubilant sensation for as long as you can, Karen Schwartz. Until your next book release, this accomplishment will inspire you and serve as a reminder that you are capable of achieving your goals! You’ve already proven that you can do it. Congratulations on becoming a published author!

On June 24, Karen Schwartz proudly announced the release of her first book. If you have recently published anything, take this opportunity to share it with your fellow Challengers.

Reflecting on my initial publication, I recall a cheesy love poem featured in a teen magazine. I earned a staggering $10 for it, and I held on to that check until the very last moment before cashing it. Had it been in today’s digital era, I would have shared photos of it all over social media.

While I may not have cashed that check, I did find an amazing hat that I desired more than the uncashed check.

Nowadays, my payments generally come through direct deposit from Amazon or via PayPal from a few editors. It’s been ages since I received a physical check. Many of my published works are included in various anthologies, some of which I have shared on this platform.

The beauty of anthologies is that authors usually retain all rights to their stories, allowing them to republish elsewhere. I still haven’t been accepted by a prominent publishing house. I tell myself that it’s only because I haven’t submitted anything, but the reality is that I feel too intimidated to even try. Facing rejection is tough, and I don’t have an agent to assist me.

Choosing self-publishing or collaborating with smaller presses often means that writers shoulder most of the marketing responsibilities. Promoting one’s work can be quite challenging.

There’s only so much that can be accomplished online, no matter how many profiles you maintain. Engaging with people in person is essential — approaching local bookstore owners and town librarians with, "Would you consider carrying my work?"

Book signings offer an excellent opportunity to connect with potential readers, and hosting readings at your local library is another great avenue. However, these experiences can be daunting for those who are not naturally outgoing or accustomed to public speaking.

Many of us have young ones in our lives who will adore this delightful kitty adventure. I've just ordered a copy for a little one celebrating a birthday soon.
