A Deep Dive into the Costs of AI and Our Tech-Driven Lives

Chapter 2: Reconnecting with Nature
Naturally, the conversation leads us to the importance of nature. I’m Christyl Rivers, an ecopsychologist, and I believe that acknowledging our connection to the natural world is essential.
We have evolved alongside nature, developing consciousness and intelligence as tools for balance. Our ability to feel pain, empathy, and guilt guides our decision-making processes, driven more by instinct than mere knowledge. Unlike algorithms, which merely detect patterns for profit, we possess a depth of feeling that informs our choices.
While the artificiality of AI lies not in its ability to process information, but in its lack of emotional comprehension, we must recognize that our interactions with technology should not replace our connection to the physical world. Many communities still value and rely on the gifts of nature, despite the overwhelming pressure to exploit these resources.
The consequences of our disconnection from nature are dire, resulting in famine, environmental disasters, and a growing sense of despair. All living beings—including ecosystems and natural resources—are suffering from over-exploitation.
To restore balance, we must reconnect with the reality that sustains us. Dr. Carl Sagan once referred to our current state as a “technological adolescence.” The question remains: can we return to the natural world to find our way back to balance, or has our narrative been rewritten by a detached AI system?
If pondering this question feels daunting, perhaps it’s time to step into nature.
Let the forest be your guide.
