Title: Cultivating Empathy: The Path to Understanding and Kindness

Chapter 1: The Importance of Empathy
Empathy plays a crucial role in our interactions with others, particularly in moments of vulnerability. A poignant memory from my early life illustrates this point. On a frigid January morning in the 1980s, I entered the world, my skin darkened by the stress of birth and the chilly environment. My arrival took place at home, without the benefit of a neonatal care team.
Neighbors visited my mother and me, but the comments were far from uplifting. One woman remarked, “Another girl child, and dark-skinned, too.” In India, fair skin is often seen as a symbol of good fortune.
This woman had two children—a daughter and a son—and was considered fortunate. In rural India, societal norms heavily favor sons, as daughters typically leave for their in-laws after marriage. Many impoverished parents worry about their security in old age, which further complicates these preferences.
Such remarks are particularly hurtful to a new mother, especially during a time when she requires compassion and support. Reflecting on my own experiences of motherhood, I understand the vulnerability that comes with childbirth.
As I grew older, I eventually conformed to societal beauty standards by becoming fairer. I also pursued my education fervently, earning a PhD from IIT and achieving numerous academic milestones.
The woman who made that comment later endured the challenges of Parkinson’s disease for many years before passing away. I had been aware of her tremors for over 15 years, noting her condition even back in the 1990s. It’s possible her illness arose from exposure to pesticides while she worked in the fields, or perhaps from her husband's habitual smoking.
As someone who has written extensively on topics such as inflammation, immune responses, allergies, and neurological disorders, I often reflect on my own beginnings.
Thus, I urge you to withhold judgment. Humans can inflict significant emotional harm on one another. Instead, let us extend empathy to those who are vulnerable.
Humans are classified as Homo sapiens, with "sapiens" meaning wise, a reflection of the kindness we should embody. Psychological projection leads us to criticize others, often stemming from our own insecurities.
Now that you recognize this, why not strive to refrain from shaming individuals based on their appearance? Make it a new habit.
“Empathy is about finding echoes of another person in yourself.” — Mohsin Hamid
