Embracing Short-Form Content: A Must for Modern Creators

Written on

The Value of Short-Form Content

Many individuals, particularly those over 25, often express disdain for platforms like TikTok, viewing them as trivial or even immature. This sentiment seems to echo a nostalgia for earlier forms of entertainment, such as single-panel memes on Imgur or browsing Reddit headlines.

However, it's worth considering the reasons behind the popularity of short-form content. It offers two main advantages: the ability to quickly consume information, and the immediate feedback loop for creators. While I personally enjoy long-form content, such as books and comprehensive articles, the opportunities that short-form videos on platforms like TikTok and YouTube present are undeniable.

The Short-Form Content Landscape

In the past, successful bloggers could attract millions of page views monthly. Yet, today, many newcomers on TikTok can achieve similar numbers in just a week. For instance, back in August 2021, I earned over $300 writing on Medium with a modest daily view count.

To illustrate the contrast, let’s take a look at my YouTube Shorts views over a 48-hour period:

YouTube Shorts Traffic Overview

The numbers reveal a stark difference; it would take me over 3.5 years of blogging to match just two days of engagement on YouTube Shorts. Despite my passion for reading and writing, the reach of visual content is far superior. A proficient video creator can achieve the same traffic as top writers, making video content an essential focus for aspiring creators.

Why Video Content is Vital

The beauty of short-form video is that you don't need to be an elite talent to thrive. There’s a wider safety net for average creators, allowing many to earn a sustainable income without being in the top tier of content creators.

YouTube's Recent Shift

YouTube has recently made headlines by announcing that they will monetize Shorts content, allocating 45% of ad revenue to creators. This change is monumental, as it opens the door for many creators to generate substantial income from their short videos. Typically, YouTube compensates creators between $2 and $12 for every 1,000 views, which means even modest earnings from Shorts can lead to significant annual revenue.

Despite your personal preferences for long-form content, the potential for financial gain in short-form is compelling. Producing videos that last between 15 to 60 seconds can yield impressive returns, surpassing traditional formats like blogging in terms of earnings.

The Future of Content Creation

While writing remains a passion, the demand for short-form content is on the rise. Creators who tap into this burgeoning space stand to benefit significantly.
