Finding Balance: 6 Principles for Writing While Working Full-Time

Chapter 1: Embracing the Journey
Three years ago, I found myself uncertain about my future after graduating. Fast forward to today, I've penned over 870 articles and built a newsletter audience of 10,000 subscribers. I'm passionate about my work, and I want to share the lessons I've learned along the way.
Here are the six essential principles that have guided me through my writing journey:
Section 1.1: Accepting the Off Days
In the past, a single bad day could derail my entire week. I’d find myself frustrated, impacting my productivity for days to come. Now, I’ve developed strategies to cope:
- Taking morning walks with my dogs.
- Reading inspiring content from admired individuals.
- Seeking motivation from those who excel in their fields.
It’s crucial to recognize that not every day will be productive. For instance, I recently chose to binge-watch Netflix for five hours instead of writing. And you know what? That's perfectly fine. I'm in this for the long haul, and a few unproductive days won’t set me back.
Section 1.2: The Power of Systems
The effectiveness of a writer can often be attributed to the systems they implement. I once believed that writers simply sat at their desks and let inspiration strike. However, I now understand that successful writers rely on robust systems for generating ideas and creating content consistently.
I’ve established my own systems for everything, from brainstorming to content creation.
Subsection 1.2.1: Rethinking Improvement Standards
Setting a goal of becoming 1% better each day is unrealistic. Some days, my productivity can drop significantly—by as much as 87%. Life doesn’t work in a linear fashion; instead, some days I may improve by 23%, while others might only see a 0.1% gain.
It’s better to aim for gradual improvement over a longer time frame, such as monthly progress, allowing for flexibility.
Section 1.3: Prioritizing Sustainable Growth
The key question should be: How can I maintain this for the long term? I’ve read about individuals who earn millions online while managing to rest for 12 hours a day. The focus should be on sustainable growth—making sure I can keep showing up day after day.
This means taking care of my health, well-being, and ensuring my progress is consistent and healthy. Let’s ditch the late nights fueled by hustle culture.
Section 1.4: The Importance of Your Inner Dialogue
The way you speak to yourself is incredibly important. Your internal narrative can significantly influence your well-being and success. By fostering a kind and honest self-talk, you set the stage for positive outcomes.
Conversely, if your inner voice is overly critical, it can lead to burnout and discouragement. It’s essential to nurture this voice and recognize that you have the power to alter it.
Section 1.5: Realizing Your Dreams
Visualize achieving your biggest aspirations. For me, that looks like:
- Publishing a book that makes the NYT bestseller list.
- Achieving financial success and acquiring my dream home.
- Dedicating time to writing and walking my dogs.
The reality is that I can already write for about four hours a day. Most days, I achieve around three hours, balancing early mornings with my writing routine. Living this dream has made me realize how close I am to my goals.
