Discovering the Impact of Intrinsic Rewards on Writing Success

Chapter 1: The Journey of Ultra-Running and Writing
In my experience as an ultra-runner, I have discovered profound lessons about the importance of intrinsic rewards and how they can propel writers toward success.
At times, I question my choice of a hobby that subjects me to such discomfort.
My passion for running distances that most people would drive is both exhilarating and exhausting. Mid-run, I often find myself longing to give up and just rest. Yet, once I complete a run, I instantly feel the urge to tackle an even longer distance.
Section 1.1: The Birth of My Intrinsic Reward Addiction
During the early stages of my running journey, I achieved distances I previously considered unattainable—6 miles, 10 miles, and even a half-marathon. The thrill of surpassing each milestone became addictive. However, as I continued to push my limits, the exhilaration began to wane.
My half-marathon accomplishment no longer felt like a significant achievement. I soon sought out greater challenges: my first marathon, followed by my first ultra-marathon, and eventually a grueling 24-hour endurance event.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Disappearing Reward
During lengthy runs, I often find myself questioning my choices, wondering, “Why do I choose a pastime that inflicts so much pain? Why not enjoy something less demanding, like tennis?” Yet, despite the discomfort, I keep returning to the sport. The sense of accomplishment that comes with each new endurance feat far outweighs the temporary suffering. By the next day, I’ve forgotten the pain and am already plotting my next challenge.
Section 1.2: The Role of Intrinsic Rewards in Writing
As a writer, you may encounter mental struggles akin to the physical challenges I face while running.
You might grapple with thoughts such as, “Why do I even write? No one reads my work. There are countless better writers out there. What do I have to contribute?”
These negative thoughts can creep in at any moment. To combat this, you need to cultivate intrinsic motivation that encourages you to continue creating, even when it feels futile.
Just like my initial 6-mile runs, the satisfaction derived from writing can diminish over time. It’s crucial to establish regular milestones to reignite that sense of achievement. Consider your writing aspirations and outline specific goals.
Some milestones I’ve set include:
- The first person who shared that my writing inspired them
- The first individual to seek my advice
- Writing consistently for 7, 14, 30, or even 50 days
- Receiving my first payment for a piece on Medium
Each milestone reached brings back that exhilarating sense of success.
Become addicted to that feeling of accomplishment. Set achievable goals, and your writing journey will flourish.
It’s only a matter of time.
