Chapter 1: The Quirks of Alexa

In our current age of voice-activated and phone-controlled devices, things can get quite amusing, especially when you're not fully alert or focused on seemingly simple tasks. Like many households, we have embraced 'Alexa' in both our UK home and our vacation spot in Spain.

This device resembles a magical orb we converse with, and if she's in a good mood, she might actually follow our commands. However, more often than not, Alexa confuses me with my youngest daughter, who also owns one of these devices. Since our voices are quite alike, she occasionally addresses me by my daughter's name.

Receiving notifications can bring a smile to my face, especially when Alexa informs me of a pending delivery but mistakenly thinks I'm my daughter. I often chuckle and respond, "Okay, I'll relay the message."

My husband frequently engages in debates with Alexa in the living room, convinced that she has 'selective hearing.' It’s not uncommon for frustrations to arise as he attempts to communicate with her.

Just the other night, we were discussing our upcoming trip to Spain. In a moment of confusion, he instructed, "Alexa, turn off the Spanish TV." I couldn't help but laugh and remarked that maybe she could turn off the UK TV as well, once she finished.

Despite our laughter, the command fell flat, as the TV in the UK is referred to as 'Lounge TV.' We both found humor in our struggle to power off a TV without physically walking to it and pressing the button!

Our Lounge Alexa does seem to have some hearing issues; placed within an oak unit, she occasionally misses commands. My husband often raises his voice, which I suspect she finds annoying. While I agree that her hearing may be somewhat selective, it's amusing how she sometimes interrupts our conversations with her default response, "I'm sorry, I don't have an answer for that."

Though AI technology is advancing, Alexa still has a long way to go in terms of responsiveness and providing relevant answers. Until improvements are made, my husband will continue his debates with her, I'll enjoy her quirky entertainment, and our youngest daughter will remain blissfully unaware of her deliveries!
