Transforming Your Focus: A Guide to Shifting Your Attention

Chapter 1: The Power of Intention
Are you seeking more happiness and tranquility in your life? A key step is to redirect your attention. We often notice things that reaffirm our beliefs. If we want to alter our perceptions about ourselves, our lives, and the world around us, we must consciously choose what we wish to believe and actively seek out evidence to support those beliefs.
This may sound straightforward, but it requires effort and a deliberate mindset. Let’s explore how to achieve this.
To start, there's a part of your brain that assists in this process: the Reticular Activating System (RAS).
What is the RAS?
The Reticular Activating System, located near the base of your brain, acts as the filter for sensory information (excluding smell). For instance, after purchasing a Prius, you might suddenly notice them everywhere, thanks to your RAS highlighting what’s relevant to you.
Your RAS helps manage the overwhelming amount of data your senses collect, focusing on what your brain deems important. If you hold a particular belief, your brain considers it significant, which is why your RAS tends to find information that validates those beliefs while ignoring the rest.
To harness the potential of your RAS, you must take control of your beliefs. This is where it gets challenging—you need to deliberately seek out what you want to believe.
Section 1.1: Exploring Self-Beliefs
Reflect on how you present yourself to others and your own self-image on a daily basis. Set a clear intention to embody the person you aspire to be.
For instance, if you recognize a need for greater patience, consciously choose to cultivate that quality. This mindset encourages you to pause and think before reacting, fostering a belief in your own patience.

Section 1.2: Observing Others Positively
If you manage others, make it a priority to recognize their achievements. Begin your day with the intention of acknowledging their successes, which can make it easier to address areas needing improvement later on.
When I focus on appreciating the contributions of my family, I notice the chores they’ve completed and the small acts of kindness they show. Without this intention, I often become frustrated, fixating on what remains to be done.
Section 1.3: Shaping Perceptions of the World
Our perceptions of the world are influenced by the constant stream of information we encounter. If you perceive the world as harsh and unkind, your RAS will help you find evidence to support that view. Conversely, if you believe in the inherent goodness of people, your RAS will guide you to affirming examples.
Remember the words of Anne Frank, who, despite her dire circumstances, chose to focus on the kindness of others. If she could maintain such a perspective, we can also set positive intentions to seek out goodness in the world.
Chapter 2: Setting Your Daily Intentions
Begin each day by defining how you wish to present yourself to your loved ones and your community. By making a conscious choice about how to perceive yourself and others, and with the assistance of your RAS, you can transform your outlook.
