Unreasonable Optimism: The Key to Long-Term Success

Written on

Chapter 1: Embracing Unreasonable Optimism

Over ten years ago, I made a pivotal decision: I no longer wanted to be under someone else's authority. My goal was to gain more autonomy and foster a sense of self-sufficiency. Relying on multiple clients rather than a single employer felt like a safer bet, as one boss could easily decide to let me go at any moment. Thus, at the age of 24, I left my position in a real estate office to pursue a career as an illustrator. I was determined to shape my own destiny.

My journey has been filled with far more failures than triumphs. There were times when my cash flow was nonexistent, and I often felt foolish, inadequate, and lost. However, over the years, I cultivated a quality I observed in those who appeared invincible: ‘unreasonable’ optimism. This mindset involves accepting reality, even when the evidence suggests otherwise.

Those who achieve long-term success are not fundamentally different from anyone else. We all confront an unpredictable future, and no one has all the answers. To thrive and maintain our sanity, we must embrace the ‘unreasonable.’ After all, being reasonable can be quite mundane and uninspiring.

You must be prepared to take risks when others choose to retreat. When faced with obstacles, focus on extracting lessons rather than fixating on losses. While others hesitate and deliberate, you should be the one to take action, even without full clarity. Now THAT is what it means to be unreasonable.

To truly thrive, you must keep a light-hearted perspective while others dwell on the negative. Cultivating unreasonable optimism keeps your spirit high and opens up a realm of possibilities.
