Chapter 1: My Love for the iMac

I find myself torn between my iPad Pro and the stunning new iMac. Let me share my story:

I have always preferred working at a desk, even when I primarily used a laptop. However, this setup often led to discomfort, especially while typing and dealing with subpar viewing angles. The iMac has always caught my eye, particularly the 21-inch model, as my primary tasks revolve around writing and don’t require immense power. Selling my MacBook to invest in an iMac was a thought I entertained, but what about portability? If I retained the MacBook, what would be the purpose of owning two machines that perform similar functions?

Intel Macs were decent during their time, but they lacked the snappiness I had grown accustomed to with iOS devices. The introduction of the iPad Pro in 2018 marked a turning point for me. I opted for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, paired it with a keyboard, and later added a mouse once the iPad OS introduced support for it. With a good stand, my iPad morphed into a mini iMac of sorts.

The iPad serves as both a portable device and my dedicated writing machine at the desk. I cherish it so much that I’ve written extensively about it, including discussions on the future of iPads. Yet, deep down, the iMac remains my dream computer. With the M1 iMac, Apple has finally persuaded me to consider ownership. Plus, it resembles an iPad, only in a larger form.

When it’s time to work, having a dedicated computer at the desk is incredibly satisfying.

The M1 provides ample power for professional use, which is evident in its popularity among users. While it may lack certain ports, it still packs enough capability for most users. The M1 iMacs cater to a broader audience rather than just professionals. They are positioned at a more accessible price point, making them an attractive option for families or individuals who rely on a computer for their livelihoods.

For long-term use, the pricing of the new iMacs is reasonable, especially considering Apple’s reputation for durability. My MacBook Air is over eight years old and still operates well. For that duration, the investment in a new iMac seems worthwhile.

Section 1.4: Desk Setup

I take pleasure in arranging my desk to enhance productivity. My iPad Pro setup resembles a mini iMac while offering portability. However, I yearn for a larger screen. The 21.5 inches was satisfactory, but the 24-inch 4.5K display is the icing on the cake. After years of using a laptop or iPad, a 24-inch screen feels expansive. The iMac can dominate the desk, while my iPad can serve as a secondary display, especially useful for note-taking and research.

If the speakers live up to their claims of Spatial Audio, I might need to relocate my HomePod mini.

Section 2: Color Choices and Aesthetics

The iMac's vibrant colors add a refreshing touch to any desk. They make the device appealing, even to those who aren’t particularly tech-savvy. In today’s world, having a computer at home is essential, and Apple’s colorful offerings enhance the aesthetic of any space. While some may prefer a classic silver model, I personally would love an orange iMac.

Section 2.1: Touch ID Keyboard

The color-coordinated accessories are a lovely feature, but the introduction of Touch ID to the iMac is what excites me most. This addition enhances user convenience significantly, making the entire lineup feel more cohesive and complete.

I do wish Face ID was included across all Macs, but I suppose that's a topic for another day.

While not portable in the conventional sense, the iMac’s lightweight nature allows for easy relocation within the house. It’s convenient to move your entire setup without needing extensive cables or peripherals.

My ideal setup has always involved a main computer at the desk and a portable device for moving around. In this regard, my iPad Pro complements the iMac perfectly, allowing for versatile productivity.

The Verdict

The iMac may not suit everyone; it’s not intended for professionals nor for casual users who prefer mobility. Most users would benefit more from a MacBook Air, which I often recommend. However, there exists a niche of users, like myself, who appreciate the M1's power in an all-in-one setup tailored for desk use. For us, the iMac is ideal. If the budget is tight, the Mac Mini offers excellent value, provided you source your own screen and accessories. With some effort, you can create a setup that rivals the iMac at a lower cost.
