Chapter 1: The Struggles of Arizona's Iconic Cacti

The majestic saguaro cacti, which stand tall as a symbol of the Western United States, are currently facing significant challenges due to a severe heatwave and ongoing drought in Arizona. These towering plants, which can reach heights of over 40 feet and live for more than two centuries, are showing signs of distress as temperatures in Phoenix, the state’s largest city, have soared past 110 degrees Fahrenheit for a continuous span of 25 days.

Summer monsoon rains, essential for these cacti’s survival, have failed to materialize, putting their resilience to the test both in natural habitats and urban environments.

"These plants are designed to withstand high temperatures, but eventually, the heat needs to subside and rainfall must occur," stated Tania Hernandez, a research scientist at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, home to a vast collection of cactus species, including saguaros.

Hernandez and her colleagues have noted that saguaros are exhibiting adverse effects from the extreme heat and drought conditions. “Reports indicate that saguaros are toppling, shedding their arms, and altering their shapes. While we cannot definitively link this to climate change, we do have strong suspicions," she explained.

If cacti do not experience nighttime cooling or rainfall, they may incur internal damage, which can take years to manifest and potentially lead to their demise.

"Plants can endure prolonged dry spells while waiting for the wet season, but there is a limit to their endurance. If the rains are delayed, internal damage begins to set in," Hernandez remarked.

The saguaro cactus possesses several adaptations to survive high temperatures. It features ridges that provide shade, a stem that retains heat during the day and releases it at night, and a significant water reserve that aids in photosynthesis and shields it from extreme heat.

However, these adaptations may not suffice in the face of escalating temperatures and extended droughts projected to intensify due to climate change.

Scientists at the Desert Botanical Garden are actively researching the heat tolerance of cacti and the anticipated impacts of climate change. They are utilizing Phoenix as a heat island, simulating the elevated temperatures that wild plants are likely to encounter.

Hernandez hopes that the public will recognize the critical role of saguaros and other cacti within the desert ecosystem and their cultural significance.

“They are not only stunning plants but also vital to wildlife. They offer food, shelter, and nesting areas for numerous species. Additionally, they hold cultural, historical, and economic significance for humans,” she added.

For those who have saguaros in their gardens, Hernandez provided some practical advice: “To water your saguaro effectively, create a tree well around its base and allow a hose to trickle water for 4 to 6 hours. This method helps ensure that water penetrates deep into the soil, reaching the majority of the roots.”

However, she cautioned against excessive watering, as stagnant water around the cactus's base can lead to its collapse.
