# Breaking Free from Social Media: A Transformative Journey

Chapter 1: The Decision to Disconnect
Nearly two years ago, I made the spontaneous choice to quit Facebook, Instagram, and all other platforms owned by Meta. Initially, this decision raised eyebrows among my friends and family, who were curious about my absence. However, those who truly mattered were able to reach out to me without difficulty, as I was always nearby. Gradually, I noticed a significant shift in my daily life.
With recent warnings from the Surgeon General regarding the serious risks social media poses to mental health, I can’t help but wonder if others are beginning to recognize the sheer futility of a tool that has seeped into every aspect of our lives, even our dreams.
It's possible I'm jumping to conclusions, and many of you may shrug this off and return to scrolling. Before you do, I’d like to share some of the positive changes I’ve experienced since bidding farewell to Zuckerberg and his network.
Section 1.1: Reflections on a Social Media-Free Life
Since leaving social media, my life has transformed in numerous ways:
- I now get my news from trained journalists who can separate fact from misinformation.
- I limit my news intake to once a day, allowing me to focus on other things.
- I’m often the first one out the door for a bike ride or run.
- I find out about family updates much later than I used to.
- I no longer feel compelled to “like” posts.
- I don’t engage in dislikes either.
- I stopped sharing updates about my life online.
- I express my emotions using precise language, tailored to each moment.
- My vacations are spent experiencing the world rather than documenting it for social media.
- I no longer feel the need to view others' vacations.
- My writing has flourished, leading to more requests than ever.
- I have zero interest in trending games like Wordle.
- I take the time to appreciate my cat’s adorable antics.
- I enjoy petting my cat when she’s particularly charming.
- I make it a point to call friends to check in on them.
- These conversations often reveal personal stories they wouldn’t share online.
- I take pride in my achievements in face-to-face conversations, accepting the feedback that comes with it.
- I’m oblivious to the current lives of my ex-partners.
- I’m free from the burdensome thoughts of strangers I’ve never met.
- At night, I drift off, dreaming of genuine connections with real people.
