Finding Freedom from Depression: A Journey Beyond the Shadows

Written on

Understanding the Weight of Depression

Feeling trapped under an immense pressure, like a massive truck pressing down on my chest, I often wished for the last remnants of my vitality to simply vanish. Gazing out the window, all I could perceive was an overwhelming darkness, despite the world being blanketed in a pure, white snow that I referred to as "the great white shroud of despair." What led to this darkness consuming my existence, and how did I eventually escape from this suffocating coffin called life?

The Reasons Behind My Struggles

Residing in northern Michigan, winter was never my preferred season, amplifying my feelings of depression. Friends from my past were reluctant to associate with me, burdened as I was by a pervasive gloom that clung to me like a heavy coat. If Eeyore were real, I would have been set for life with royalties from Disney.

My struggles began when I was thrust into adulthood without any guidance on navigating daily responsibilities, just as graduation loomed on the horizon. To buy time while I figured out my path, I impulsively enlisted in the military, only to find that life had shifted into fast-forward mode.

I transitioned from the military to various states—Louisiana, Michigan, Florida—getting married and divorced multiple times along the way. Each significant life change seemed to pull me deeper into an abyss I hadn’t even recognized existed.

A Journey of Many Changes

With 30 jobs under my belt—25 of which were complete career shifts—and having moved 25 times across five different states, I had traveled to 14 countries and navigated three marriages. It became clear that the emotional toll of marital changes far outweighed that of job changes. My depression was like a bucket of sludge spilling over everything I touched.

Faced with a choice between starting anew or ending it all, I felt trapped in this cycle of despair. Eventually, I think the universe responded to my silent cries for help, sending an unexpected nudge that set me on a transformative path.

The Awakening

Strange occurrences started to happen: I began hearing about New Zealand everywhere. It felt like a sign, so I dove into research, convinced that it was more than coincidence. The more I learned about this distant country, the more I felt compelled to go. Eventually, I sold nearly everything I owned to buy a one-way ticket to this new land of promise.

After nearly seven months of contemplating, I found myself in Auckland, New Zealand, with no plans and no acquaintances. I rented a car and booked a room, ready to embrace the unknown.

An Adventure of Faith

Most of my six months in New Zealand were guided by blind faith. My plans were often spontaneous, leading me to breathtaking landscapes that filled me with gratitude for life and creation. Each new experience outdid the last, leaving me in awe and wonder.

After five months, I settled on the North Island, found a job, and established a community. I learned quickly that my time there had come to an end, and when I returned home, I felt utterly transformed.

The Key Components of Change

Never before had I stepped so far out of my comfort zone, nor had I felt such profound freedom. I identified three main components in the process of breaking free from complacency, with faith being the common thread:

  1. The Nudge: That quiet inner voice urging you to take a step in a new direction.
  2. The Obstacles: The barriers that prevent you from embarking on your journey—excuses, fear, and the opinions of others.
  3. The Journey: The essence of growth, filled with challenges, adventures, and opportunities for personal development.

While I am not a medical professional and cannot prescribe solutions for depression, I learned that sometimes, the key to liberation lies in stepping out and truly living.

Recognizing the Reasons for My Stagnation

I realized that my struggles stemmed from perfectionism and a lack of gratitude. Do you find yourself needing certainty before taking action? Are you so analytical that you never reach a conclusion? If this resonates with you, chances are you remain stuck at the nudge or obstacle stage, hindered by excuses and a lack of faith.

When you feel that nudge, respond to it. Complacency is a stagnant state born from perfectionism, fear, and anxiety, which can lead to a deep spiral of despair. The human spirit thrives on challenges and new experiences.

The Path Forward

Let go of the need for control. Allow life to unfold as it will, and embrace opportunities as they come. Be prepared, but recognize that perfection is unattainable. Push through obstacles and remember that for every excuse to avoid action, there is always a compelling reason to move forward.

Live fully and share your joy. You might just find that your depression has faded or at least taken a back seat, allowing you to take the wheel of your life once more. Focus on taking small steps rather than fixating on the end goal; trust that it will fall into place.

Be grateful for everything, even the seemingly negative experiences, as they prepare you for the next phase of your journey. And remember, don’t accept “no” as an answer.
