The first step for the Musk brothers was acquiring a local business directory for a few hundred dollars. They then sought to obtain free access to mapping software from Navteq. With these two components in hand, they aimed to merge the databases using some coding skills to develop a website that would help users locate any business nearby.

Musk often emphasized the importance of allowing people to easily find the nearest pizza place and directions to it. Today, such a website might seem redundant, given the multitude of mapping applications available, like Google Maps, that offer comprehensive services.

However, at the time, software like Zip2 was groundbreaking, capturing the attention of many, particularly Compaq Computers. After several rounds of funding and growth, Compaq ultimately acquired Zip2 for a staggering $307 million in 1999, the same year the company ceased operations.
