Embracing the 5 AM Routine: A Month of Transformation

Chapter 1: The Turning Point
The final months of 2021 were quite challenging for me, both mentally and physically. My enthusiasm for life waned, and I found myself grappling with various issues. The thought of going to bed was daunting, as sleep felt elusive. If I managed to fall asleep, it would often be around 4 or 5 AM, only to wake up by 8 or 9 AM for work.
As January 1, 2022, approached, I engaged in deep self-reflection, contemplating how I could improve my situation. One of the strategies I decided on was to train myself to sleep earlier, allowing for an earlier wake-up time. Aware that this wouldn’t be straightforward, I chose to avoid putting undue pressure on myself. If I stumbled, I would simply try again. Gradually, I transitioned from sleeping at 3 or 4 AM to turning in by 1 AM. Progress was my focus, and it felt rewarding.
I began to intentionally conclude my day earlier, distracting myself from negative thoughts. By February, I started going to bed by 11 PM and waking around 5 or 5:15 AM.
WHAT CHANGED IN MY APPROACH?
I became more conversational with myself; whenever negativity crept in, I would either meditate or listen to an uplifting audiobook or song. I set my alarm for 4:55 AM, placing my phone out of reach. The sound of the alarm required me to get up to snooze it, which effectively helped shake off sleep. I didn’t jump out of bed; instead, I would sit and engage in a lively debate with myself about whether waking up so early was necessary.
I started planning my days the night before, which made me anticipate the upcoming day with excitement. My to-do list was a valuable tool in quelling the inner dialogue, as it clarified my tasks for the morning. I allowed myself some flexibility; even if I hit snooze and woke at 6 AM, I still felt grateful because it was significantly earlier than my previous routine.
I began vlogging, which may not suit everyone, but as a content creator on YouTube, starting a new lifestyle vlog channel has been a significant source of personal growth. Making my bed each morning served as a deterrent against returning to sleep. I incorporated prayer and journaling into my routine, which brought me immense joy. I listened to uplifting music while brushing my teeth, followed by my prayers and journaling.
WHAT HAVE I GAINED FROM THIS EXPERIENCE?
Though still a work in progress, I am quite satisfied with my journey thus far. I resumed working out and alternated my mornings between writing articles or scripts for my finance channel, editing videos, reading, or listening to podcasts. Sometimes, I even filmed content, depending on how much time I had before 10 AM.
Waking up early has been instrumental in keeping my channels active while balancing my full-time job. I also learned the importance of journaling, which I highly recommend. Additionally, going to bed earlier allows me to rest well and prepare for the next day.
I aim to sustain this new routine and have no regrets. While challenges persist, I find them worthwhile. I look forward to sharing my progress in the coming months. Cheers!
