Exploring the Balance: The Role of Seeing and Not Seeing

Written on

Chapter 1: The Nature of Perception

What if our minds are not merely instruments for interpretation, but rather tools for observation?

When we close our eyes, our vision fades. Similarly, if our hearing is impaired, we become unable to hear. Imagine if our minds could shut down in response to overwhelming stimuli—what would that mean for our understanding of reality? Just as we might shield our eyes from bright light or use noise-canceling headphones in a loud environment, our minds can automatically cease to perceive when the heart determines that the situation is too intense for our fragile mental state.

This leads us to ponder: Should we always strive to see, or are there moments when it's beneficial to refrain from observation as our internal systems suggest? The conventional wisdom, shaped by societal conditioning, argues that we must remain vigilant, managing our emotions, feelings, and actions at all times.

However, I propose that it is acceptable to experience moments of vulnerability. As articulated by artists like Mariah Carey and Ryan Stevenson:

"'Cause there is freedom in every drop. Sometimes the only way to heal a broken heart is when we fall apart." ~ Ryan Stevenson.

Experiencing emotional breakdowns is a natural part of life, akin to trees shedding their leaves in autumn. Recognizing this process can ease our journey through it, allowing us to navigate it with greater understanding.

The brain, and thus our mind, is inherently sensitive. While the heart has a unique sensitivity, it lacks the capacity for complex thought processing—having thousands of neurons compared to the billions in the brain. The primitive amygdala, responsible for our survival instincts and emotional responses, is closely linked to the heart via the vagus nerve.

Seeing

Seeing is our default mode of operation. We continuously engage in observation, interpretation, and analysis of the sensory data we receive. Over time, we've become so accustomed to this way of knowing the world that we often overlook alternative methods.

Not Seeing

What if we could view our minds as tools for observation rather than interpretation? What if our hearts were the true sources of meaning in our lives?

To explore this, find a quiet space and close your eyes. Allow your mind to quiet, free from the incessant need to analyze. Focus on your heartbeat, the sensation of blood coursing through your veins, and the rhythm of your breath. In this state, you may discover a deeper connection to life itself, realizing that a more fulfilling existence unfolds when we allow our minds the space to rest.

This state of being reflects how we existed for countless millennia before the advent of modern cognition.

Let Your True Self Emerge

Both seeing and not seeing are essential components of existence; one naturally leads to the other. While striving for calmness is important, it often stands in contrast to stress. The cycle of wakefulness and sleep exemplifies this balance, with each state enhancing the other.

Embrace both seeing and not seeing in your life. By doing so, you can cultivate a more harmonious and contented existence.

In the first video, "What does a thought look like, within the Brain?" we explore the intricate processes that define our thoughts and perceptions. This video delves into the science behind how our brain interprets and visualizes ideas, providing a fascinating look at cognitive function.

The second video, "Science-Based Mental Training & Visualization for Improved Learning | Huberman Lab Podcast," offers insights into how mental training techniques can enhance learning and cognitive performance. This podcast discusses practical strategies for harnessing the mind's potential through visualization and focused training.
