Navigating the Complexities of Publication Requirements

Chapter 1: The Dilemma of Follower Requirements
Let me clarify my stance upfront: I hold a genuine appreciation for publications. They have provided me with a platform to share my thoughts and creations. However, one aspect that perplexes me is the expectation that writers must follow the publication creators. To me, this feels somewhat exploitative.
I understand the arguments surrounding AI and adherence to Medium's guidelines. I even appreciate the notion of selecting topics. But now, on top of that, there's an expectation to follow the publication creators themselves? I’m willing to support the publication, but it feels disingenuous to require a follow for what should be a merit-based system.
Writing is an endeavor driven by passion, not a mere entry ticket into the publication world. It seems that the current environment encourages individuals to manipulate the system rather than focus on the craft of writing. The emphasis should be on genuine writing, not inflating follower counts simply because one has established a publication.
The idea of leveling the playing field for all writers, regardless of their publication status, is crucial. Creating an inclusive environment should not come with a prerequisite of following someone just because they happen to manage a publication. Ideally, a publication should foster a community of writers and promote transparency and fairness in the writing process.
Section 1.1: The Ethics of Following
When writers, especially those launching new publications, feel compelled to solicit followers, it raises questions about their commitment to their craft. Setting a requirement to follow someone in exchange for collaboration seems unjust.
Following a publication is one thing, but following an individual simply because they initiated it is another matter entirely. Every writer should earn their respect and recognition, just like anyone else in the field. Starting a publication does not equate to providing a selfless gift; it’s a venture that requires dedication.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Future of My Writing Journey
Section 1.2: Commitment to Quality Over Quantity
I have contemplated the idea of launching my own publication but opted against it for now. If I do decide to take that step, it will be because I can wholeheartedly commit to it. There’s a possibility I may start one in the future, but I refuse to impose a requirement for followers merely to gain visibility.
I genuinely appreciate the work of those who dedicate time and effort to enhance the writing community on Medium. Your contributions are invaluable, and they help elevate the platform for everyone involved. If my perspective on this issue leads to exclusion from future publications, then so be it. My intention was never to write for a platform that prioritizes follower counts over quality writing.
Chapter 2: Emphasizing Authenticity in Writing
The writing journey is demanding, and it requires resilience and passion. What I cannot accept is the notion that I must follow individuals I wouldn’t normally choose to simply to be part of a publication. That feels disingenuous.
I want to connect with writers because of their talent, not due to some obligatory requirement. I seek collaboration based on mutual respect and shared goals, not forced connections.
I anticipate some pushback for my views, but that’s alright. My intention is not to belittle publication owners; rather, I urge them to let the writing shine on its own merit. The act of starting a publication should not automatically confer status or dictate follower expectations.
I choose to be selective with my attention and support. Allow me to write for you without the prerequisite of following you. Let’s work together towards a common goal, rather than creating barriers to entry.
I extend my gratitude to all the publications that have embraced my writing. I look forward to future opportunities to contribute, but please, do not make following a requirement. After all, you initiated your publication because you are passionate about writing, and that should remain the focus.
