Is Your Soul at Peace? A Deep Dive into Faith and Assurance

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Your Soul's Condition

Have you ever truly considered the state of your soul? This isn't about your current feelings, your church membership, or whether you recited a specific prayer. The question is, is your soul genuinely at peace?

You might claim that your soul is prepared for eternity, but what is the basis of that assurance? Are you confident in your salvation? If your answer is rooted solely in a preacher's words from your childhood, I urge you to reconsider. It’s concerning to think that someone can simply declare salvation based on a prayer.

The Bible instructs us in 2 Corinthians 13 to introspect and assess our faith. It doesn't suggest relying on others’ opinions or leaving things to chance. If you can pass this examination, it indicates that Christ lives within you, affirming your salvation. But what if you discover that you have never truly been in Christ?

Is your soul still at peace then? The book of 1 John provides tests that can help you verify your faith. I invite you to engage with these assessments.

This challenge is not intended to provoke anger or gain your approval; rather, it aims to lead you to a place of genuine reflection. It is crucial for your heart to confront the reality of your relationship with Christ, because without that relationship, the consequences are dire—eternal separation from God. I want you to have certainty about your standing.

If we insist that we are without sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. However, if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Denying our sins makes us liars and indicates that His word is not within us (1 John 1:8–10, NIV).

Section 1.1: The Nature of Sin

How do you view sin? A sincere faith in Christ and an understanding of His sacrifice requires a deep awareness of sin’s impact on both you and the world. Recognizing the devastation caused by sin should lead to a profound sense of sorrow.

It’s easy to look back at history and label certain individuals as evil, such as those responsible for the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime. It’s simple to criticize the nation of Israel for their cycles of righteousness and rebellion. But this self-examination demands a level of honesty that can be uncomfortable.

Consider who you are when you believe no one is watching. Who are you in solitude, when your pastor isn’t present? Who are you when you think even God is oblivious? That is the person we need to scrutinize.

For you to find peace in your soul, you must acknowledge that you share the same sinful nature as those who have led others astray throughout history. The truth is, if you break even one part of the Law, you have violated it all.

This revelation should humble you and compel you to seek forgiveness from the Almighty. It's painful to recognize the wrongs you’ve committed, both directly and indirectly.

Are you truly heartbroken by your sins? Or do you dismiss them with thoughts of being better than others? Understand this: unless you have lived as flawlessly as Christ, your heart should be heavy with remorse.

Section 1.2: The Evidence of Faith

We can be assured of our relationship with Him if we adhere to His commands. Those who claim to know Him but do not follow His teachings are deceiving themselves. Conversely, those who obey His word exhibit true love for God, indicating that they are indeed in Him (1 John 2:3–6, NIV).

This leads us to another critical question: Are you living in a manner that reflects Christ? If your life mirrors His, it’s evidence of your rebirth; if not, you may still be of this world.

I do not subscribe to the notion of achieving sinless perfection in this life. Believing that one can live faultlessly is misleading. However, our actions reveal the example we strive to follow.

I have immense admiration for my grandfather, whose work ethic, wisdom, and problem-solving abilities have always inspired me. I aspire to emulate him in various situations, even though I often fall short.

The same principle applies to our faith. As Christians, we should aim to reflect Christ in our lives. Though perfection is unattainable, our responses to our shortcomings should lead us to seek forgiveness and strive for improvement.

Is your soul at peace? Reflect on the following questions from 1 John to determine whether you are walking in light or darkness:

  1. Have I sinned significantly against God?
  2. Does my lifestyle reflect Christ's teachings rather than worldly values?
