Make 2024 Memorable: Beyond Resolutions with Goal Setting
Written on
Chapter 1: The Limitations of Resolutions
Indeed, I firmly assert that I have little faith in resolutions! Before you jump to conclusions, allow me to explain.
What Exactly is a Resolution?
A resolution, as defined by standard dictionaries, refers to a strong decision to take a specific action or refrain from doing something. It also embodies the quality of determination. This concept can lay the groundwork for self-motivation and discipline, but that’s where it stops—a mere foundation.
What we truly desire is not just a base but a fully constructed home, complete with our preferred decorations and amenities. While resolutions may signify a starting point, it is the act of setting goals that truly builds upon that foundation.
Though resolutions hold value, they often lack a clear action plan for realization. As January rolls around, enthusiasm for these resolutions runs high. Yet, as the months progress, that zeal tends to wane due to a critical paradox:
There exists the will, but often no actionable pathway!
What is Goal Setting?
Conversely, a goal is defined as the target toward which efforts are directed. Notice the emphasis on effort, which is absent from the concept of resolution. This lack of actionable direction renders resolutions transient. Thus, dear reader, let’s embrace goal-setting this year.

According to Wikipedia, goal setting entails creating an action plan designed to motivate and guide individuals or groups toward achieving a specific aim. Does this sound more proactive and intentional? I wholeheartedly agree!
Here are three essential tips to ensure that the upcoming year is productive:
- Discover Your Approach
- Utilize the SMART Framework
- Savor the Journey
Section 1.1: Discover Your Approach
There are numerous strategies to establish your goals for the coming year. I particularly appreciate the three methods outlined by Ali Abdaal in his informative video below. I encourage you to watch it and see which approach resonates with you. The Wheel of Life model divides your life into three main segments and further into subsegments, allowing you to assess and set goals for each area. Following this, the Ideal Week format enables you to translate your Wheel of Life goals into actionable daily and weekly tasks.
Section 1.2: Utilize the SMART Framework
The SMART approach is widely recognized in various fields including academia and business, and I find it to be quite effective. For instance, if your resolution is to improve your health, let’s transform that into a SMART goal:
- Drink more water daily (Specific)
- Experiment with seven new gut-friendly recipes (Measurable)
- Increase my water intake by three glasses on work-from-home days (Achievable)
- Commit to Home Pilates three times a week, since a gym isn’t accessible (Realistic)
- Track my weight changes by April 30, 2024 (Time-Bound)
Now, that feels much more actionable!
Bonus: Manage Your Expectations
An extension of the SMART method is that “A,” “R,” and “T” help in managing your expectations. Resolutions can often become fantasies. Dream big, but remain grounded in your current circumstances and resources, so you are better positioned to recognize opportunities.
Section 1.3: Savor the Journey
Enjoying the process of working toward your goals is crucial, as results may take time to manifest. Focusing solely on outcomes can diminish your joy and lead to impatience—consider the time it takes to build muscle at the gym. While goals provide direction, life continues to unfold, so it’s important to relish the journey.

For instance, imagine navigating a new city using Google Maps while on holiday. If it takes longer than expected to reach your destination, instead of feeling frustrated, you might choose a seat by the window to enjoy the scenery, eavesdrop on local conversations, or snap a selfie with a travel companion. In this way, you can appreciate the journey while working toward your goal.
So, as you embark on the next chapter of your life, do so with purpose.
There exists both the will (resolutions) and the way (goal setting).
Take care, dear reader, and don’t hesitate to indulge in tales of romance.
