In 2021, Apple made significant strides with the launch of the M1-powered iPad Pros, revamped MacBook Pros featuring M1 Pro and Max chips, and the introduction of 120Hz displays in the iPhone 13 Pro series. However, 2022 promises to be even more thrilling. Along with essential redesigns across Apple’s product range, the next-generation M2 chip is set to arrive, heralding impressive enhancements over the M1.

Anticipation is building for several upcoming Apple products. Let’s delve into the details.

Apple is expected to completely overhaul the original iPad and iPad Pro, while making slight upgrades to the iPad Air and Mini. Although the iPad Pro 12.9" received a stunning Liquid Retina XDR display and both Pro models have the leading-edge M1 chip, the design has remained unchanged since 2018. Meanwhile, the 9th-generation iPad continues to showcase the same design it has had for several years.

Fortunately, Apple recognizes the need for refreshment across these devices. The next entry-level iPad may either adopt a look similar to the 3rd-gen iPad Air or borrow features from its pricier counterparts, including thinner bezels and the removal of the home button. While a design resembling the older iPad Air may seem less thrilling, it could alleviate the identity crisis that the current iPad Air and Mini face.

To address this, Apple is likely to refresh the iPad Air with an updated A15 Bionic chip, 5G capabilities, and possibly a dual-camera system along with quad speakers—features that might not be available on the base model. The iPad Mini is rumored to receive a 120Hz ProMotion display, enhanced storage options, and improved performance from the A15 chip.

Meanwhile, the iPad Pro series is set for a major overhaul. Besides the expected M2 chip, these flagship tablets may feature a third camera, wireless and reverse wireless charging, and possibly MagSafe. The 11" model will also likely adopt a Mini LED display similar to the 12.9" version.

Although initial designs indicated a glass back for these new iPads, Apple has reportedly shifted away from that plan due to durability concerns. Instead, the plan is to enlarge the Apple logo and create it from glass, allowing for wireless charging while maintaining the strength of a metal back.

Chapter 2: Upgraded MacBook Air and iMac Pro

Transitioning to Apple's Mac lineup, significant changes are also anticipated for the MacBook Air and iMac Pro.

The MacBook Air will undergo a dramatic redesign, potentially featuring additional ports, a smaller frame due to reduced bezels, and a lightweight design. Alongside these enhancements, the inclusion of the M2 chip promises to elevate performance, enabling faster single and multi-core processing while retaining the four high-performance cores that the M1 chip had.

This advancement is vital as the new chip is expected to maintain high performance levels without generating much heat, allowing the MacBook Air's sleek design to remain effective. While the price may increase, even a $200 rise would still position the MacBook Air as a competitive option given its performance and upgraded design.

In terms of the iMac Pro, several display options are rumored, including a base 24" display resembling the refreshed iMac, a mid-tier 27" Mini LED display with ProMotion, and a top-tier 30–32" model with thinner bezels. The base model may not feature ProMotion or Mini LED technology, allowing Apple to offer it at a more accessible price.

The new iMac Pros will be powered by the M1 Max Duo, effectively doubling the performance with up to 20 CPU cores and 64 GPU cores—an impressive feat that will outshine the Intel chips being replaced.

Chapter 3: Apple Watch Series 8 and AirPods Pro 2

For 2022, Apple is expected to unveil three versions of the Apple Watch: an affordable SE 2, the standard Series 8, and a rugged Adventurer Edition. The SE 2 will maintain its predecessor's look while adding features like an always-on display and a blood oxygen sensor. The Series 8 is set to include a body temperature sensor and possibly a glucose monitoring feature.

The most intriguing model will be the Adventurer Edition, designed for durability at the cost of some premium features. This model might feature exceptional battery life due to a thicker design that accommodates a larger battery and a more energy-efficient screen.

In addition, the new AirPods Pro 2 are anticipated to launch, possibly replacing the iconic stem with a more traditional design. Notably, these earbuds are rumored to support Lossless audio, allowing for sound quality that closely mirrors the artist's original recordings. This could revolutionize the listening experience, especially if they utilize ultra-wideband technology to overcome Bluetooth limitations.

Chapter 4: The iPhone 14 Series

Finally, excitement builds for the next generation of iPhones. Apple is reportedly streamlining its lineup by eliminating the iPhone 14 Mini, opting instead for the standard iPhone 14, a larger 14 Max, and the regular-sized iPhone 14 Pro alongside a larger 14 Pro Max.

Design-wise, the iPhone 14 and 14 Max will retain the notch from the previous model and continue with a dual-camera system. However, both models will benefit from a 120Hz display and a camera module that sits flush with the back of the phone.

In contrast, the Pro models are expected to adopt a double hole-punch design that eliminates the notch, housing the Face ID dot projector and the selfie camera. A significant camera upgrade is also on the horizon, with the possible introduction of a 48 MP wide lens, though it may utilize pixel binning to produce 12 MP images. This advancement should enhance low-light performance and enable 8K video recording.

Despite these improvements, the iPhone 14 series will continue to feature the lightning port, foregoing the shift to USB Type-C. Moreover, the under-display fingerprint reader and the rumored 10x periscope zoom system may not make an appearance.

On a positive note, the iPhone 14's frame is likely to be constructed from titanium, offering a premium finish. The A16 Bionic chip, built on a 4nm process, is expected to improve performance and efficiency. Additionally, at least one model may eliminate the SIM card slot in favor of dual eSIM capabilities, enhancing water resistance and freeing up internal space.

In summary, 2022 is shaping up to be an exhilarating year for Apple. While not every product refresh introduces groundbreaking changes, Apple continues to refine its offerings, ensuring they remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
