A Young Entrepreneur's Harsh Lesson About Taxes

Chapter 1: A Sunny Afternoon Revelation
In August 2021, I was on my way to the library when the beautiful weather inspired me to take a detour. I decided to stroll by the town pond in hopes of sparking my creativity, but my muse had other plans and chose not to accompany me. Thus, I ventured out alone in search of a compelling story.
During my walk, I encountered a familiar face—Margaret, the neighbor of my friend Bill. Fifteen years ago, I had sold her a costly mattress during my brief and unsuccessful stint in selling Sleep Number beds.
Margaret, a robust woman in her seventies with dark curly hair, was chatting with a slender boy named Simon. Together, we listened as Simon excitedly shared details about his new venture. He had opened a snack stand in his yard, conveniently located near the high school. With the school year approaching in two weeks, he anticipated making significant profits; at present, he was earning about fifty dollars daily.
Margaret, ever the practical one, asked Simon about his net earnings and pointed out that he needed to deduct his costs. Simon explained that his father was funding the snacks, allowing him to keep all the revenue he generated.
Margaret cautioned Simon against boasting about his earnings, reminding him that both state and federal taxes applied to his income.
Pointing towards me, she added, "For all you know, this woman could be an IRS agent. You might find yourself in trouble for back taxes."
Simon turned pale at this suggestion.
I quickly assured him that I was not affiliated with the IRS and would keep his secret.
He glanced at Margaret, likely hoping she would back me up. However, she remained silent on the matter.
Feeling a bit uncomfortable, Simon decided it was the right time to leave. Perhaps he'll find my muse after all. If that happens, I’m curious about what insights she might share. I have a hunch Simon won't be discussing his business escapades.
Section 1.1: The Realities of Entrepreneurship
The conversation highlighted a crucial lesson for young entrepreneurs: the importance of understanding expenses and taxes. Many aspiring business owners, like Simon, often overlook these factors in their excitement to earn money.
