Engaging Adult Learners: Four Effective Training Strategies

Understanding Adult Learning
This guide offers valuable insights for those new to training adults. With over forty years of experience in the Training and Learning & Development sector, I aim to share practical tips to assist novice trainers.
Recognizing the Unique Traits of Adult Learners
Training adults differs significantly from teaching children. Adults come with a wealth of experience, having navigated various professional environments, traveled, and often managed households. They are typically accustomed to competence and respect in their roles, which should be reflected in your approach to training.
1. Assess Familiarity with the Topic
Begin your training sessions—whether individual or group—by gauging your trainees' familiarity with the subject matter. Ask about their past work experiences and relevant knowledge. This inquiry not only reveals the group's expertise but also encourages participation from those who may have valuable insights.
2. Clarify the Importance of the Topic
Adults are more engaged when they understand the rationale behind their learning. For example, when teaching tutors how to fill out training logs, I found that many were unaware of the significance of detailed record-keeping. By explaining the potential consequences of poor audits, I was able to motivate them to adhere to the necessary procedures.
3. Show Respect Towards Adult Learners
Always approach your adult learners with respect. Simple courtesies, such as saying "please" and "thank you," go a long way. Some trainees may have had negative learning experiences in the past, so creating a comfortable atmosphere is essential. Allow flexibility, such as breaks for smokers or accommodating late arrivals.
4. Encourage Active Participation
Adults prefer to engage actively in their learning. Facilitate hands-on activities right from the start. Enhance information-based sessions with quizzes, discussions, and practical exercises. Encourage movement and interaction, such as writing on whiteboards, rather than passively reading slides.
Summary of Key Points
When training adults, remember to:
- Assess their existing knowledge.
- Explain the reasons behind processes and policies.
- Treat them with respect to foster a positive learning environment.
- Encourage immediate engagement in activities.
