Chapter 1: The Essence of Self-Discovery
In this post, I want to share a significant lesson I’ve learned about rediscovering oneself and the journey to truly living again. It’s a journey worth exploring!
How a Parable Shifted My Perspective
Greetings, dear friends! I hope this message finds you healthy and full of joy. This narrative reflects on my personal journey of rediscovering who I am and re-emerging into life.
The past few years have been quite a ride for me. It's been four years since I left my old life behind to embark on a new path. There have been many highs and lows, and I find myself in a phase of transition and readjustment once again. I realize it's time to move beyond using that pivotal change as a benchmark for who I am today.
A wise person once shared a parable with me that has lingered in my thoughts, and as I reflect on it now, it resonates deeply.
The Parable
Once, a man yearned to change his life. Sitting in his lovely home, he reflected on his numerous achievements, from degrees to awards, feeling a bittersweet mix of pride and sadness. Despite his successes, he felt unfulfilled and uncertain about how to embark on his journey of transformation.
One restless night, he resolved to leave everything behind and seek self-discovery. He parted with his possessions, holding onto just a simple loincloth, and traveled to a secluded place to meditate and reflect.
The first year was dedicated to mastering meditation, learning to quiet his mind and connect with his body. By the second year, he felt he was progressing well; he was healthier, calmer, and happier.
However, in the third year, while washing his loincloth, a rat leaped from behind a bucket, snatched it, and ran away. Frantic, the man chased after the rat and retrieved his precious cloth, only to find it damaged. Devastated, he wept and cried out for guidance.
"Why has this happened to me? How could a rat ruin my only possession? Please, give me a sign! Am I on the right path to fulfillment?"
After calming down, he decided to meditate, seeking to ground himself once more. An idea struck him: “I’ll get a cat to catch the rat, ensuring my loincloth remains safe.”
He ventured into town, acquired a kitten, and soon realized he needed milk for the cat. This led him to consider getting a cow, which spiraled into acquiring a herd of cows and hiring help to manage them.
In the end, he found himself overwhelmed with work and stress, leaving little time for meditation and peace.
This parable raises significant questions about the essence of living a fulfilled life. While I understand that fulfillment is shaped by our values and aspirations, this tale ignited a minor yet impactful existential reflection within me.
My Own Journey
Three years ago, I left Lethbridge, Alberta, with just two suitcases and a carry-on, storing a few cherished mementos. Fast forward to today, I find myself with a cat, a life partner, a dog, and various possessions that I once thought unnecessary.
Reflecting on the man’s experience, I realized that despite physical journeys, we often return to similar states of being.
Values Are Key
Living in alignment with our core values is essential. It took me four years to identify mine, which guide my actions and aspirations. When I feel a ‘rub’—that uncomfortable sensation signaling I’m out of sync—I remind myself of my values: gratitude, authenticity, compassion, and courage.
The 'rub' often highlights a lack of authenticity, prompting me to realign and honor my core beliefs.
Embracing My Values
I have developed a personal mantra that encapsulates my aspirations. It’s a process to uncover core values, but it’s profoundly rewarding. I believe my purpose is to uplift women, honoring the cycle of life and making a difference.

The Importance of Tribe
Who is your tribe? These are the individuals who challenge you and support your growth. While we may have acquaintances for various needs, it's our true tribe that helps us realign when we stray.
These trusted friends love us unconditionally and allow us to explore our identities freely.
Friend Up
I encourage seeking out those who inspire you. I often tell students to find the smartest person in the room and connect with them. Aligning with those who are achieving what you aspire to can significantly influence your journey.
Reflecting on my own experiences in educational programs, I realize the profound impact of surrounding myself with motivated peers.
Fun Is Essential
To lead a fulfilling life, it’s vital to reconnect with our inner child. I once dreamed of being a journalist, inspired by the exciting lives of reporters. Over time, I lost sight of those passions amid adult responsibilities.
Rediscovering those joys has become essential. Blogging allows me to channel my past interests, while writing children's books helps me connect with my inner creativity.
Celebrating Freedom Through Fun
Embracing fun brings freedom—freedom to explore, create, and enjoy life. On my recent birthday, I made a flower crown with a friend, reminding me of the joy in simple pleasures.
Here’s a glimpse of my birthday celebrations in Hainan, China (2022):
In a recent weekend getaway, we created a silly movie, losing ourselves in laughter and camaraderie—proof that fun truly matters.
Conclusion
The parable taught me that fulfillment isn’t about material possessions but how we choose to live. For me, three ingredients are essential: values, tribe, and fun.
I welcome your thoughts on this parable and what you believe are the keys to a fulfilled life.
Sending love and light,
Suzanne
