A Reflective Journey Through Stoic Wisdom and Fantasy Tales

Chapter 1: Rediscovering Seneca's Wisdom
Recently, I found myself delving back into the writings of Seneca. His profound letters and insights have become my lunchtime companions.

Section 1.1: The Art of Selective Reading
In his second collection of letters, Seneca encourages readers to engage deeply with a select few authors and revisit their works frequently. It’s intriguing how this advice resonated with me just when I subconsciously began to adopt it. A few weeks ago, I made a conscious choice to reduce the variety of my reading and listening habits. Instead, I focused on a smaller group of authors and podcasts, returning to books and episodes I had previously enjoyed.
I particularly relished revisiting my favorite fantasy novels. Approaching these stories again, I found myself drawn to different characters, reflecting my growth as a more mature reader. While I still have an affection for elves and my enduring favorite, Calis from the Magician Saga, I have also developed a fondness for Erik von Darkmoor and Jimmy. Observing how characters' values influence their choices and actions is always a captivating aspect of storytelling.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Depth of Written Reflections
Seneca’s works showcase his remarkable capacity for deep reflection and offer valuable guidance to others. They provide an intimate glimpse into a mind far removed from the transient nature of tweets, emails, or comments. Although I often find myself distracted by the latest social media trends, my true enjoyment lies in books, articles, and thoughtful blog posts that reveal diverse experiences and insights.
The way Seneca begins many of his letters, addressing a close friend, inspired me to start writing letters to my daughter a few weeks before her birth. This has become a weekly ritual that I eagerly anticipate. While my letters may lack the eloquence and depth of Seneca’s, they encapsulate moments of my daughter’s life, weekly milestones, and my reflections.
One attraction I have toward Stoic philosophy is its practical application to daily life rather than engaging in abstract theorizing. Seneca and other Stoic thinkers provide profound insights into leading a fulfilling life.
As I read Seneca, sipping my coffee during lunch, I appreciate the man behind the wisdom, flaws included. It’s not solely about his profound insights; this practice is a driving force behind my writing. Although I acknowledge there’s ample room for growth, I embrace being a work in progress.
In my non-fiction reading, I’ve chosen to spend time with the following authors:
- Seneca
- Epictetus
- Steve Kamb
- Cal Newport
- Nathan Barry
Who are some authors you cherish? What are your favorite pieces?
