Why Age of Empires II Will Forever Be My Favorite Classic Game

The Enduring Legacy of Age of Empires II

In the realm of gaming, few titles have achieved the iconic status of Age of Empires II, especially for those who grew up during the '90s and transitioned into college life in the early 2000s. Alongside Counter-Strike, it reigned supreme in the multiplayer gaming sphere. Back then, the gaming landscape was quite different: the PlayStation, which debuted in 1994, was still considered a luxury, while desktop computers dominated, as laptops lacked the necessary specifications for demanding games. It’s amusing to remember that having 1GB of RAM was seen as extravagant, while today, even mid-range smartphones boast between 4GB and 8GB.

With the rapid advancement of technology, game lifecycles have shrunk, often lasting just a few months. Yet, amidst this whirlwind of change, Age of Empires retains its place on my laptop, ready for nostalgic gaming sessions that transport me back to 2007–08. Those were the days of campus wars, where two teams of four faced off all night, even when final exams loomed the next day!

Over the years, from 1999 to 2021, Age of Empires II has generated $1.6 million in tournament winnings, a testament to its enduring popularity. Microsoft also reaped approximately $1 billion in revenue from this title. But what is it about Age of Empires that cements its status as a classic? Here are my thoughts.

A Masterpiece of Historical Detail

Age of Empires is more than just a game; it's an educational journey through history. Players can explore civilizations ranging from the Persian warriors with their war elephants to the Spanish conquistadors, and the skilled Byzantines. Each civilization is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring a unique experience for players. No two civilizations are identical; they each come with distinct advantages and disadvantages, creating a balanced competitive environment.

Creating such an intricate game requires more than just coders and graphic designers; it demands a collaboration of historians, storytellers, and gamers who can infuse life into the gameplay. Being developed by a tech giant like Microsoft ensured that no detail was overlooked.

Dynamic Gameplay with Infinite Possibilities

While Age of Empires has a fundamental set of gameplay rules, no two games are ever identical. Players bring their unique styles, making each session a fresh experience. After countless games—both in multiplayer and single-player modes—I've never encountered the same scenario twice. This variability keeps boredom at bay and ensures that players face new challenges that require both experience and quick thinking.

Appealing to Diverse Gaming Personalities

The game's multifaceted nature caters to a wide range of player preferences. Whether you enjoy farm management or strategic battles, Age of Empires has something for everyone. Starting with a few villagers and a town center, players can expand their empires by constructing buildings, gathering resources, and forming armies, all while advancing through different ages.

However, much like historical empires, growth invites competition. Players must balance their forces—infantry, cavalry, archers, and naval units—to achieve victory. The challenges are substantial, yet each obstacle has a counter if one plays wisely.

The Balance of Individual Skill and Team Collaboration

While individual excellence is essential, teamwork becomes crucial in multiplayer scenarios. You might be a brilliant strategist, but without synergy with your teammates, victory could slip away. The diverse landscapes, objectives, and civilization combinations add layers of complexity, requiring mastery in both solo and group play.

Few games so vividly differentiate between solo and multiplayer experiences, and Age of Empires was truly ahead of its time in offering seamless multiplayer functionality.

Timeless Narrative and Impressive Graphics

Some may argue that the game's graphics are outdated, yet even modern AR and VR games often lack the depth present in Age of Empires. Remarkably, the entire game was coded in C, a language many budding programmers learn.

The graphics, while basic, are rich with detail—the lumberjack felling trees and the archer shooting arrows are small yet significant touches that enhance the experience. Everything is rendered to be as lifelike as possible given the technology of the time.

For fans of the series, the ongoing expansions and new content released by Microsoft demonstrate the game's lasting appeal. While newer titles capture the gaming community's attention, the classic Age of Empires II — Conquerors Expansion remains a cherished favorite. My wife and I often engage in multiplayer matches, challenging ourselves against the computer at "Hard" difficulty to maintain a fair fight.

The joy of revisiting those cherished moments is truly priceless!
